Health promotion at Old Doune Road Nursery
Lunch
We use a company called Healthy Tots who prepare home cooked healthy lunch time meals in line with the 'Setting the Table' document which ensures your child has low sugar and salt in each meal. Healthy Tots prepare these fresh and bring them to the nursery ready to serve. For more information please speak to a member of management.
Please see our sample menu below from Healthy Tots for more information.
Morning and Afternoon Tea
We provide a variety of healthy snack options in a rotation of four weeks. These options are reviewed each term and are based around the children's likes, dislikes and healthy options our families would like us to promote. We provide a light snack in the morning and a tea in the afternoon. Some children go home for their dinner and may require a smaller portion.
We have a healthy eating policy in Old Doune Road Nursery as we are very keen to promote a healthy lifestyle. We use 'Setting the Table' national guidance which advises us of healthy foods, portion sizes and what foods to avoid. Fresh fruit and vegetables and other healthy snacks are on offer, and we provide milk and water to drink. All food is low in sugar.
Children are involved in the daily preparation of snack and tea, from doing their aprons, to washing hands and surfaces. It is a fun way to learn about health and hygiene.

Toothbrushing
Childsmile is a national programme designed to improve the oral and general health of children in Scotland and has proven to reduce cavities in children under the age of 5 years old.
Children in the nursery are given an individual toothbrush showing a symbol which matches a symbol on a storage chart system and wall chart.
The children are involved in daily supervised tooth brushing about an hour after lunch, every day.

Active Play
At Old Doune Road, we encourage children to participate in adventurous play every day, either indoors or out. This will give them the opportunity to involve themselves in physical experiences, including large physical play equipment, music and movement, den building, using tools, scissors and preparing meals.
This type of exploration improves confidence and self esteem, co-ordination, working as a team, problem solving, creativity, imagination and risk assessing situations either by themselves or with adult support when needed.
